Wheeler's Yard

our long awaited date after two whole weeks finally arrived! (: gosh, school has been taking such a toll on our lives (or at least Sam's life. haha this sem was pretty much the best deal i could ever get in my four years in uni ^^) and guess what! it's the last week of school. i'm graduating soon!!! :O omgosh. it's still too surreal to believe >.< and i'm not really looking forward to it very much i have to say. and gosh, i still cannot believe i agreed to go to NEPAL. what the heck was i thinking??!!?!?!!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?? it's not just out of my comfort zone. it is not even in my zone at all :( sigh. please let me survive this.

so happy to be on a date ^^ decided to check out Wheeler's Yard - and it turned out to be quite an experience! :) i was initially skeptical because i read about how the food wasn't that great, but the ambience definitely made up for it! it had a really cool industrial-chic vibe, which Sam loved. just check out all those vintage bicycles at the back! and the cafe was located in a really ulu location in balestier, in a warehouse! thank goodness Sam drove that day.

the interior was surprisingly spacious - there was this massive communal table right in the middle of the cafe, with lots of seats scattered around it and if you want to ogle at the bikes while having your meal, you can take your pick from the seats outside. the whole place screamed RETRO! with the mish-mash of vintage furniture, and exuded a ruggedness that was unexpectedly comforting.

the food, as established, was nothing fantastic. but at least they don't have service charge/GST which make up for the lack of splendour. i kinda felt that my beef pie ($8.90) was more value-for-money than the Big Breakfast ($16.90) since the latter was nothing special. it was decent, no doubt, with all the de rigeur big breakfast items. but they just seemed to be placed on a plate together without much effort, much like the chapalang feel of the whole cafe - which works well for the ambience, but not so for the food. the beef pie too, was alright, but not great. it was tasty! but seemed pretty much like any frozen pie that was heated up, and it wasn't very crispy. plus points for providing tortilla chips though ;) hehe.

the good thing about this place is that because of its rather inaccessible location, it seems pretty quiet, making it great for hanging out as a couple. i would say, come here for the experience, but manage your expectations with regard to the food.

Upside Motion

hello! :) i've been meaning to blog about my fitness/healthy eating regime, but procrastinated terribly! this post shall mark the beginning of a series of few more posts (*i will try my best* since finals are coming...) on this topic which you can follow here, and i can't be more excited to kickstart this with my experience at Upside Motion! :)

i came across Upside Motion in some magazine previously and i was really fascinated by the kind of classes they have at their studio! because i learnt dance previously, i tend to be intrigued by exercises that train strength and flexibility through similar means - yoga and Pilates for example. i always find yoga a little too relaxing though (with the exception of hot yoga which is really awesome!), but i LOVE Pilates (read about my Pilates experience) ^^ at Upside Motion, you'll never get bored ;) their classes are nothing like your standard yoga or Pilates classes. what i was attracted to was their Xtend Barre and Antigravity Aerial classes.

*hello from upside down!*

SERIOUSLY?! yep, i could hardly believe my ears when my instructor asked me to flip upside down in my first class of Antigravity Aerial! :O i was absolutely freaked out!!! i have this fear of hanging upside down (firstly because i get motion sick, secondly because I'm terrified that i'll crash head first to the floor). i didn't dare to let go of the hammock at all!! held on to it as if my life depended on it (which seems perfectly legit right?!) my instructor had to come along and pry my hands off :P i felt a teeny bit more secure with her supporting me, while i lifted half a finger off my grip, then a whole finger, and one hand, then the other. and oh my mama, i was hanging with nothing but the hammock supporting me!

after a minute of quivering though, i started to feel the immense liberation of hanging upside down. all the blood rushed to my head. but i just closed my eyes and enjoyed the feeling of my mind being blank. it was incredible. i started to enjoy it. especially as more lessons went by and i trusted that the hammock would hold me securely, it was an amazing feeling.

i learned to fly! (this photo was taken pre-flying)

and i did crazy stunts! i looked forward to every single lesson of Antigravity Aerial because we tried new things each time, with increasing level of toughness, but it was empowering to find that i could do these stunts! of course i wasn't good at all of them, but the strength-training was really good.

Antigravity Aerial is a great exercise for a low-impact, full-body workout that stretches, strengthens and works the core muscles without placing unnecessary pressure on the spine and joints. all these upside down actions are especially good for people with stiff backs because it really helps to lengthen the spine and releases the tension in the neck and spine. have i mentioned how it's really therapeutic as well? ;) - my favourite part of each class was at the end, when we would cocoon ourselves in the comfy satin hammock. it's such a lovely, warm, enveloping feeling and i could totally fall asleep in it! haha. and it's absolutely safe. every successful move gave me more confidence in the strength of the hammock, and it really pushed my boundaries in overcoming my unfounded fears :)

Xtend Barre was a whole different feat. it was TOUGH. no doubt about that. but i loved every single bit of it.

ever wondered how ballet dancers have such toned, taut bodies? i found out the tough way in Xtend Barre :P but it's an incredible exercise! I just saw the funniest quote the other day:

You aren't going to get the butt you want by sitting on the one you have

haha! it's so true!!! if you want the toned, chiseled physique of a dancer, you've gotta work for it! and literally, in that one week of classes (i attended them quite regularly), i already felt a difference in my body. plus all the other exercises that i've been doing (which i'll blog about soon!), it's really been helping me a lot in strengthening and toning my body :)

using various equipment such as small weights, a bouncy ball, yoga strap, resistance band, and the barre of course, Xtend Barre sculpts the body through a combination of isometric exercises and orthopaedic stretches to tone hard-to-reach muscles (some of which you never knew existed). my thighs, glutes and calves screamed for mercy (gosh how could such simple-looking exercises be so tough??!!!!) but i tried my best to press on. that's really the whole spirit of exercising! never ever give up! even if its tough, just work to your maximum and take a break. you'll get better each time ^^ taking this bunch of photos was a crazy test for my muscles which were already shagged out from the class before that (so i put in a lot of effort to smile ok...haha), but the extra exercise gave me an additional boost of fulfilment ;)

for girls who've always wanted more toned legs, arms, butt and abs, Xtend Barre is the perfect exercise to achieve the lithe silhouette of a dance without building unnecessary bulk.

i really enjoyed all my classes at Upside Motion and i strongly encourage you to try them out too! :)) plus, it's SO NEAR school (for those in SMU) - a less than 5 minute walk away, which makes it super convenient ;) do try it out and check out their website and Facebook for more information! ^^

oh yes! and fyi, Upside Motion recently launched an app which makes it absolutely fuss-free to check class schedules, book your classes and keep track of them! no more forgetting what classes you've signed up for ;) i hope you enjoy the classes as much as i did!

Time to Chi11ax

there is something about the last semester in school that feels different. week 11 of school and here we are, taking 2 luxurious hours off school to indulge in French cuisine ;)

fine dining restaurants are out of my league - while i love good food, i can't bring myself to spend thaaaat much money on it, at least now when i'm not earning any money yet. and that's where Restaurant Week comes in! (: from $25++, you get to enjoy a set meal at typically pricier restaurants that gives you way more mileage than the amount you pay for.

i've known of the existence of Restaurant Week for pretty long already (several years probably?), but for some reason which i can never comprehend, it just never occurred to me to sign up for it! O.o really glad that this time i finally had my virgin Restaurant Week experience (and a second time the very next day!) thanks to jiayee who asked all of us to go together ^^ what's better than having good food, is having good food + AWESOME COMPANY haha. makes the dining experience so much more enjoyable (: and it was pretty hilarious in fact :P hope we didn't embarrass ourselves oops.

the set menu at Taratata Bistrot looked super enticing, and i'm so glad for my enthusiastic foodie friends who immediately suggested us ordering every single option to share ^^ perks of dining in a group, yay!! and i absolutely loved every single dish we had (:

every time i put snails in my mouth, i give myself a pat on the back. haha still quite amazed at the things i eat sometimes (but i don't think i'll go any further than this anyway). Demie-douzalne d'Escargots au Beurre d'Ail Persillé. man, i love french. i should probably have pressed on further to learn the language better, but that was four years ago already (again, wow!), and all i mustered was a smattering of nouns when i was in Nice last year. whoops! maybe it's time to practice the language again before i head to Brussels in June ^^

anyway, i digress as usual :P this was an amazingly fragrant dish. the pungent aroma of herbed garlic butter whet our appetites immediately, and it was a delicious starter to pave the way for the rest of our dinner.

the Baked Eggs Casserole with Duck Gizzard Confit and Mushrooms was a hit-and-miss dish at our table. guess you either love it or hate it. and...i loved it! :) perhaps what you might find unpalatable about this dish is the flavour of the liver. but it tasted just like foie gras to me! and i LOVE foie gras. meltingly soft, the duck dissolved on my tongue, and i felt the liver taste was pretty mild tbh! i detest stuff like pig liver and innards with a passion, but i felt this was really manageable (:

the Pan Roasted Kurobuta Pork Tenderloin in Mustard Sauce was super well-received! i would say one portion of this for two people to share definitely wasn't enough :P it was tiny! but packed with flavour. loved how the pork was so delightfully tender and the sauce was really flavourful with tangy notes.

i was pretty sceptical about the Salmon Coulibiac with Watercress Butter Sauce. i hate watercress! :x and i knew Sam would never order anything that sounded like this, when there was the Kurobuta pork as an alternative! :P hahaha. but turned out that i quite liked it actually! it was a baked salmon in a puff pastry (and you know i love anything pastry), and the sauce was creamy without being overwhelming. and there was no taste of watercress. phew!

and the pièce de résistance - DESSERT!!!! :D we all had one portion of this to ourselves. no choice here. and i'm so glad we did! it was absolutely delicious ^^ i would totally come back for this!! though i warn you that it's REALLY RICH (and sinful haha). A delicious crisp croustade encasing smooth, lusciously rich molten chocolate. the chocolate was A.M.A.Z.I.N.G. it could put many molten chocolate cakes out there to shame. this was thick, yet with just the perfect viscosity such that it rolled over our tongues and coated it with decadence. just the right balance of bittersweetness (though it was a little too much after awhile. but i wouldn't complain haha) and simply bursting with flavour! it came with a caramel sauce drizzled on top and a really interesting ginger bread ice cream on the side. i was surprised by the ice cream! it was super delicious - thankfully without a strong ginger taste, but rather, more cinnamon-y. i loved it! it was really an explosion of flavours though. perhaps a tad too rich after awhile. but still, LOVE IT.

also, i managed to squeeze in a mani/pedi at Ladyfinger that week too! ^^

loving my simple, but pretty toenails after the service! decided to give my fingernails a break because they started chipping (AGAIN) after i went for a gel manicure somewhere else :'( does anyone experience the same problem?? this is the second time it happened, but i never had a problem with gel manis previously.

what i was really happy about after the pedicure though, were my super duper smooth heels! :O look at that!!!!! :) i've had a thick patch of dead skin at my heels for as long as i can remember (probably because of my excessive use of flip flops :P) and i tried to smooth it out with scrubs, pumice stones, lots of moisturising, but nothing ever worked. i remember the my nail therapist being really hard at work scrubbing at my soles, but i just thought "oh well, it's never going to work. i already tried so hard."

I was wrong. and utterly amazed!! :D i've really got to put in more effort to keep it this way though! looking forward to my next pedi already hehe. for those who would like a really pampering treatment, remember to check out the awesome deal that Ladyfinger has extended to my readers as well! (:

Almost there

it's crazy, how fast time flies. there is only about a couple of weeks left to the end of school, and about a month till the end of my final semester in SMU. :O where has all the time gone! the four years in university, all the memories that i've had along the way :') really really glad for the important friendships i've formed in these four years. so many unexpected things! in a good way of course (: celebrated ngan's birthday recently with our two best groups of friends in SMU <3 the ones who've made my university life so much more colourful and memorable.

happy birthday bestie! (: stay pretty (and look like zoe tay) forever ^^

celebrated her birthday with the Hopers at Concetto! the new italian restaurant by Saveur. will blog about that in a bit! this is a photo with our ever-growing family :'))) so happy to see everyone like this! <3<3 wish liying & ngan's boyfriends were here tooooo. and huishan is missing from this photo. but so much love for these friends who went through thick and thin together while we were slogging away on OCSP hehh :)

and my favourite SMU girls! :))) shall not post the one with the guys because i look so unglam there (sigh). we look so colour-coordinated in white/black in this pic!!

went to watch Non-Stop after that and IT WAS SO EXCITING!!!!! i was totally gonna jump out of my seat any moment during the movie haha! really felt like i was on the plane :O and the sound effects O.M.G. gosh but i think if i was in a situation like that i would die of fear even before the plane crashes x.x so scary when such things happen >.<

and we went for the Senior Dis-ornetation event together too! <3 haha what a funny name right :P and it was a SUPER EPIC day as well, which i'm so tempted to post a really swoon-worthy photo teehee, but it is too embarrassing. hehe ^^ so it shall remain exclusive to us ;) and we're going for grad night together!!!! wheeeeeee i'm so excited! haha it's gonna be like prom all over again, but with such awesome company ^^ i can't wait!! hopefully we'll be lucky enough (haha *cross fingers and toes*) to win that hotel stay at MBS. my happy place <3

so many memories for us in SMU i'll never forget :') thanks for the wonderful 21 months so far and counting! :)) haha so funny, that day during Ngan's birthday with the superheroes, Nic asked all the girls whether it's still worth it to have a boyfriend when it heightens all our emotions - both happy and sad. the answer? yes yes yes yes YES. i love you darling, to the moon and back and till the stars stop shining :) thank you for always loving me the way you do, with your amazing patience and biggest heart <3

prepared a lil something for my dearies in SMU! (: hope they like it ^^ and big thanks to PixaRoll as well! they sent me this gorgeous set of magnets which are the perfect gift for my superheroes! (: so many memories we've had captured in #makingyear4count (credits to Sam for the hashtag ^^) and being able to print them out just makes it even better! plus the fact that Pixaroll does magnets which is pretty innovative - something i've never seen so far! and you're not just limited to instagram photos. d'Good Cafe

finally, finally i had the opportunity to visit d'Good Cafe!! ^^ i'd been wanting to come here since last year, and it was always a potential study cafe for me because it is pretty easy to get here from where i stay and there is free wifi! but there was always some other place to go (zzz) and so we never came here - till now! and i've gotta say that it's not a very fantastic study location after all (haha) because it's so popular. BUT there is a good reason why it's so popular!! i'll definitely want to come back again for the good food, pretty cosy ambience and free wifi of course! (: i didn't take a picture of the swing, but it's soooo cute. permanently occupied, naturally. we were there on a weekday afternoon and almost all the tables were occupied all the time! the good thing is that they have quite a lot of seating space (hidden all over the place :p)

okay, enough blabbering - here's the food! ^^

two of the items i had at this cafe are MUST-TRIES, and this is one of them! :) i really didn't expect much from the chicken tikka masala ($12.50) but it turned out to be really awesome!! :D it was deliciously creamy with a tinge of butter, without being overly rich. in fact, it was super addictive and i mopped up every bit of the sauce eagerly. the jasmine rice that came with it was fluffy and subtly fragrant, and was the perfect complement to the curry.

sam ordered the eggs benedict ($13.50) and it was pretty standard i guess. the egg yolk didn't flow as nicely as he wanted it too, so it wasn't that fantastic.

but hey, we were sure satisfied with our dessert!!!!! ***drumrolls***

the Maple Sea Salt Cheesecake ($9, if i remember correctly) was SO SO SO good!!! Sam was absolutely blown away, and it was pretty amazing to see ;) it had a wonderful combination of maple syrup, with just a smidgen of sea salt to balance out the sweetness. luscious, but not cloyingly so, and the texture was just right - it was pretty light, but totally satisfying. such a perfectly balanced cheesecake! (: and plus i had the most epic experience trying to get hold of this cheesecake. you can check out my instagram for the full story if you're interested. haha.

i can't wait to come back to try their chilli crab pie and different types of pastas! everything here just sounds SO GOOD. and how about another cheesecake? ;) yep, i would definitely love to have one.

A day of pampering [Part II]

hiya! (: for those who saw my previous post on my pampering day (nails ^^), this is the other part of it! haha i really need to add a disclaimer that i DO NOT do such things all the time. it was just one day.

anyway, so i headed to _kimrobinson early that morning to get a haircut and touch-up of my roots. if you haven't seen my previous post on it, i was kindly invited to their salon to do a complete hair makeover, where they gave me the most gorgeous curls and colour! i miss my curls already!! but the hair-dye loosened the curls quite a bit, so i had real trouble maintaining it >.< fast-forward a few months, and this was how my hair looked.

so this time when i went back for a haircut, my hairstylist Carmen suggested refreshing my look by giving me a shorter style! I'm always very apprehensive about getting my hair cut short because my hair tends to stick out all over the place!! it's just unruly that way. but Carmen assured me that the trend now is to have hair just ever-so-slightly messy. anyway, i guess it's time for me to start embracing my natural waves!

this is how it looked after the cut :)))

my head feels so much lighter now!!! haha not kidding. i really chopped off quite a bit this time, and the feeling is really quite liberating ^^ though i don't know if i'll ever dare to go even shorter than this >.< but i love how this style looks so youthful, and i really appreciate how Carmen always gives me very easy-to-maintain styles! no need for hours spent trying to curl my ends in - apparently that's not how the look is meant to be. i didn't change my colour this time (just did a touch-up) since i didn't want a really drastic change just yet. but it was really thoughtful of Brian to help dye my eyebrows as well! haha it's a really subtle difference so you can't reallyyyy tell, but it's just a tad softer, and matches my hair colour now.

photo with my pretty stylist, Carmen! so happy!! :) and i keep touching my hair now because it's so super soft after the glossing treatment that Brian did for me. the effects have lasted till now! I'm so in love with that treatment ^^

the *two special promotions* which i mentioned previously are still available, so check them out if you'd like a hair-raising pampering experience ;)

Savour 2014

yoohoooooo! :) wow last week was really an eventful one (literally!) where i was out almost every single night because of one event or another. haha pretty tiring, but i'm not really complaining because i had so much fun with each of them! shall start with the biggest event that just happened - Savour 2014!!!! i am SO absolutely, incredibly happy that i was one of the winners of a competition to win tickets to this event!! :')

it's the second time i've been to Savour (no idea why i didn't blog about my first time! hmm) and this time i could bring a +1 which made it even better! ^^ haha rachel and i were totally going gaga over not just the food, but also the numerous EYECANDIES there!! those any moh chefs are too charming :') and they were so friendly too! we were so excited that they agreed to take photos with us *swoons*

reached on the dot at 5pm when the dinner session started and immediately proceeded to check out the Michelin-star chefs there!

never ever missing out on a photo op :D haha. saw a pretty backdrop for Veuve Clicquot and there were even props for us to play with! and now i shall just skip over the descriptions and dive straight into pictures, shall i? ;)

kicked off our foodie session with the Altimate Kobe Burger by Stellar at 1-Altitude. it was SO GOOD. i was really surprised  by the pretty big portions here! always had the impression that we would be served a fraction of the portions in the restaurants because it was priced cheaper. this burger was $18 at Savour (each ticket came with $30 Savour credits), and i would assume that it is at least twice the price in the restaurant itself?? (well you gotta pay for that gorgeous view right? hehe). and this burger was so damn good. two thick pieces of beef that was so juicy and succulent, and the bun was beautifully done as well, with a fluffy interior and crisp skin.

we tried Chef Alvin Leung's Molecular "Xiao Long Bao", and boy, it was an interesting experience. haha a speedy one, which my brain never really got the chance to process :P look at that ball! haha it looks like an egg yolk to me. oops. not trying to be rude or anything, but guess i just can't reallyyyy appreciate it. haha the moment i popped it into my mouth and bit down on it, the liquid just squirted out and went down my throat. it was gone in seconds. i barely even tasted it! though the soup inside was quite flavourful and yummy - but don't ask me for the details.

there was a funny story behind this dish :P we stood in front of the booth for the longest time staring, not at the food, but at Chef Julian Royer who was standing nearby! :P hahaha. he was so good-looking omg!!!! i could totally start gushing about him here, but you all would just think i'm nuts. anyway, we asked one of the staff whether we could take a photo with the chef if we ordered from the booth, and he said YES! ^^ haha we were super elated at that. and Chef Julian was soooo friendly too :) and he's french! awwwwww. he's the chef at Jaan!!!! OMG. it was one of the places which i've always wished i could try (if some money would drop down from the sky - hey it rhymes! that was unintentional haha). gosh. it was so fascinating to be able to meet him :') fan-girl moment. hehe.

wheeeeeeeeeee ^^
and btw that dish was a 55' Smoked Organic Egg which was really interesting! it had the texture similar to that of a poached egg, and was mixed with smoked potato, chorizo, iberico and buckwheat. a very interesting combination of flavours that went perfectly together.

next booth we dropped by was Chef Riccardo Catarsi's, and i believe he is italian! hehe and so we definitely had to go for the pasta right?! :D the Linguine, Crab and Nduja. i LOVED how the pasta was cooked al dente - realised that many people don't seem to be able to appreciate it, but i actually quite like how the pasta is just slightly undercooked such that it holds its texture and flavour without being overwhelmed by the sauce. especially with such a full-bodied sauce like this, which was slightly creamy and generously mixed with crab shreds.

we got to take a photo with Chef Riccardo too! (:

it was really interesting that we had a chance to do a meet-and-greet with Chef Alvin Leung too!! got his autograph (Y). coooool haha.

and he personally did a demonstration of one of his famous dishes served on that day (thankfully not the xiao long bao haha) - the Mao Tai. for the uninitiated, Mao Tai is an alcohol from China that has an alcoholic content of 50-60% and to drink it on its own (especially in Singapore where it's so hot) is quite... *WOW*. haha i wouldn't want to try it :P but anyway, he made it into a dessert by freezing it with liquid nitrogen! and added on really interesting flavours such as salted caramel popcorn, calamansi, kaffir lime and preserved kumquat.

it was a cacophony of sensations in my mouth, and it literally confused my tastebuds. but i loved the mao tai sorbet that was super refreshing and it was a really interesting dish! (:

ended our day of food on a sweet note with this chocolate pot! i can't remember which chef it is from, but it was a luscious dark chocolate creme that was bittersweet, and livened up by the bits of honeycomb in it.

besides the Savour Village where we ate all this food, we also explored the Jason's Market which was a fascinating medley of all sorts of gourmet food too! had such a fun time just chomping our way through the place haha. it was such a great experience trying all those food, and i'm so glad for the opportunity to be at this event ^^ till next year ~ (if i'm lucky again hehe)
